When a hurricane is within approximately 325 km (200 miles) of the coast, it can be monitored by land-based weather radar. These radars provide detailed information on hurricane wind fields, rain intensity, and storm movement.

On a radar weather map that measure reflectivity and is used to estimate wind velocities and rain amounts, a hurricane is seen as a large circulating mass with a well defined center (eye).

Inland Flooding

Widespread torrential rains associated with these storms often cause flooding hundreds of miles inland. This flooding can persist for several days after a storm has dissipated.

A storm of this magnitude would most likely have winds between 215 and 245 mph, with a minimum pressure between 820-845 millibars. The storm could likely have a large wind field and a small eye. Maximum wave heights from a Category 7 hurricane may be as high as 65 feet. These storms are extremely dangerous and deadly.

Florida is not included in either Tornado Alley or Dixie Alley, even though The Tampa Bay region experiences as many tornadoes, if not more, as the states in Tornado Alley, because of the average Florida tornadoes' lack of strength comparatively. The Gulf of Mexico is a major factor.

Other than both being rotating storms that can cause mass destruction, tornadoes and hurricanes have nothing in common. For one thing, they have very different beginnings. Tornadoes form over land, while hurricanes form over water.

A Hurricane Watch is issued when a tropical cyclone containing winds of 64 kt (74 mph) or higher poses a possible threat, generally within 48 hours. These winds may be accompanied by storm surge, coastal flooding, and/or river flooding. The watch does not mean that hurricane conditions will occur.
