By DEBORAH BAKER Associated Press Writer Federal security officials and computer experts have been sent to Los Alamos National Laboratory to ensure directives at the nation's premier nuclear weapons lab are being followed in the wake of a possible security breach. The FBI was called in last week after police in northern New Mexico stumbled onto appeared to be classified information from the lab while arresting a man at a mobile home for possession of drug paraphrenalia. The information discovered on computer during a search for evidence of a drug business, said Los Alamos Police Sgt.

Chuck Ney. He said police alerted the FBI to the documents, which appeared to contain classified material. The mobile home's owner, who wasn't home at the time, was listed as a former employee of one of the lab's subcontractors. Linton Brooks, head of the Energy Department's National Nuclear Security Administration, said Wednesday he was sending NSA's chief of defense nuclear security to investigate, along with a team of computer specialists to ensure compliance with department directives at the lab. He said investigators want to find out how the latest possible security breach could occur despite "extraordinary efforts in the last three years to put strong security procedures in place" at Los Alamos and other weapons facilities.

Los Alamos has a history of -profile problems that have highlighted sloppy inventory, control and security failures at the nuclear weapons lab. In 2000, nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee pleaded guilty to one count of mishandling computer files. In 2004, the lab was temporarily shut down after two computer disks were reported missing; it turned out they never existed and it was an inventory error. The lab was put under new management and the Energy Department began moving toward creating a diskless environment to prevent classified material from being carried "We intend to do everything possible to guard against any criminal activity, particularly where a breach of security may be involved," Lab Director Michael Anastasio said. Gov.

Bill Richardson, a former energy secretary in Clinton administration, noted the lab had made efforts to improve security but apparently not enough. "We need to plug the leaks, we need to beef up security," the governor said Wednesday. "This can't keep happening." FBI spokesman Bill Elwell in Albuquerque said the investigation is continuing and that he couldn't talk about the evidence seized from the home or the individuals connected to the case. The woman who owned the mobile home had worked for lab subcontractor Information Assets Management until about two weeks ago. spokeswoman at Information Assets Management would say only that the woman "is not currently employed with us." The company helps organizations shift from paper-based files to electronic systems.

The federal charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material is a misdemeanor that carries. a maximum sentence of a in prison and up to a $100,000 fine. Special Prosecutor Grills Witness In CIA Leak Case WASHINGTON (AP) Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald took on the first witness in the CIA leak case Thursday, dissecting an expert witness until she acknowledged errors and misstatements in her research. Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, hoped the hearing would persuade a judge to let him call a memory expert at his obstruction and perjury trial in January.

At the outset of the procedural hearing, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton indicated that he was not inclined to allow a memory expert to testify at the trial. Still, he allowed Libby's lawyers to present a witness to bolster their claim that memory experts would help in his defense. When it came Fitzgerald's turn, the veteran prosecutor launched into a nearly three-hour cross-examination of the witness psychologist Elizabeth Loftus that had some members of the audience shaking their heads. It was the first public courtroom confrontation between Fitzgerald and Libby's defense team and foreshadowed a contentious trial.

Libby wants to use a memory expert to help argue that, when he made false statements to investigators about his conversations with reporters regarding CIA operative Valerie Plame, it was because of faulty, memory, Prosecutors say he Loftus testified that many jurors don't understand how memory works and how unreliable it can be. Fitzgerald challenged the validity -of memory research. Citing footnotes in her publications, presenting conflicting statements and questioning her methodology, Fitzgerald got Loftus to acknowledge that a statement in one of her research papers was taken out of context and that a figure in one of her books was incorrect. Libby's defense team had no comment after court. Walton did not immediately rule on whether to allow the memory testimony at trial.

He closed the courtroom to continue the debate over how much classified information Libby should be allowed to present at trial. Libby is the only person charged in, the leak case. Plame believes the Bush administration leaked her name to reporters as retribution for her husband's criticism of prewar intelligence on Wild Pigs Eyed As Source Of E. Coli Bacteria In Spinach WASHINGTON (AP) Wild pigs may have spread deadly bacteria onto a California spinach field, sparking an outbreak that killed three people and sickened more than 200 others nationwide, investigators said Thursday. State and federal investigators have narrowed their focus to the ranch, where boar trampled fences that had hemmed in a spinach field.

Samples taken from a wild pig, as well as from stream water and cattle on the ranch, have tested positive for the same strain of E. coli implicated in the outbreak, said Dr. Kevin Reilly of the California Department of Health Services. Investigators continue to look at three other ranches in the areas in seeking the source of the contaminated fresh spinach. "We are not saying this is the source at this point," Reilly said of the ranch.

Reilly told reporters the outbreak appears to be over. It sickened 204 people in 26 states and one Canadian province, he said. Wild pigs are one "real clear vehicle" that could explain how E. FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY MAUSOLELM 903.597.1396 12053 Hwy. 64 West Tyler coli spread from cattle on the ranch to the spinach field less than a mile away, Reilly said.

The pigs could have tracked the bacteria into the field or spread it through their droppings, he said. Investigators also are looking at runoff, flooding, irrigation water, fertilizer and other wildlife, including deer, as possible sources. Investigators first recovered the same strain of bacteria earlier this month from three cattle manure specimens collected on the ranch. On Thursday, Reilly said the strain had been isolated from six other samples collected on the ranch, including from cattle.
