DMK Secures 22 Seats, Congress Takes 9 in Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Elections

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) celebrated a major victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning 22 out of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu. The Indian National Congress also performed well, capturing 9 seats, while other parties claimed the remaining 8 seats.Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha seats were contested on April 19 during the first phase of the general election. The Election Commission reported a voter turnout of 69.46%, which was revised from an initial estimate of 72%. This turnout is almost 3.5 percentage points lower than the turnout in the 2019 general elections.

Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan congratulated Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance in the state made a clean sweep in the Lok Sabha elections.

"The DMK government has reaped success in Tamil Nadu. This great success shows that the people are ready to support good governance that thinks for the people and prioritises the people's work. Dear friend, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has accumulated their victory. My sincere appreciation and best wishes to him," the MNM chief said in a post on X on Tuesday.

As per the latest number issued by the Election Commission of India, the DMK won seven seats and is leading on 15 seats. The seat position of its allies as per the ECI data are Congress (9) leading on 6 and won three seats, Communist Party of India won 2, Communist Party of India (Marxist) won two, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (2) leading on 1 and won one seat, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (1) and Indian Union Muslim League is leading on one seat.

DMK’s A Mani defeated PMK candidate Sowmiya Anbumani by a margin of 21,300 votes in Dharmapuri Lok Sabha constituency. Mani secured 432,667 votes while Sowmiya received 411,367 votes at the end of the 24th round of counting.

Sowmiya, who had been leading till eleventh round, started trailing at the end of the 12th round.

PMK is part of the BJP-led NDA. Sowmiya contested the elections on PMK’s mango symbol.

Do you know how the poll managers of the BJP started this and tried to manipulate people? This is to create a sense of fear among the Opposition cadres as well as demotivate them."Alleging that the BJP through exit polls is trying to create an impact among the officers who are involved in the counting of votes, Mano Thangaraj said, "This is not going to work and the ground reality is different. On what basis they have predicted, we don't know. It is purely a manipulation done by Modi media groups."

Tamil Nadu Election Results 2024 Live: All set for counting of votes in Tamil Nadu

All arrangements are in place for counting of votes on June 4 for the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu, officials said on Monday. Vote counting at the 39 counting centres spread across the state will begin at 8 am. Postal ballots shall be taken up first, after which the votes cast in EVMs would be taken up by 8.30 am. Nearly 40,000 personnel have been deployed for the exercise. As many as 950 candidates are in the fray in the 39 Lok Sabha segments in the state, which had a voter turnout of 69.72 per cent in the April 19 single-phase election in Tamil Nadu.
