I I Leave fireworks to professionals, fire Staff and wire reports Fun, family gatherings and fireworks are a traditional part of Fourth of July festivities. Injuries that result from fireworks shouldn't be. For a safe holiday this Independence Day, fire protection organizations urge leaving red glare" to professional experts at public displays. Fireworks caused 12,600 reported injuries i in the United States last year, with most injuries involving fireworks that are legal under current federal law, says the National Fire Protection Association. More than double the average number of fireworks-related injuries occurred in 1991-'93 vs.

1973-'75, the three-year period when tracking began. Even after adjusting for population growth, chances of having a fireworks-related injury have nearly doubled. Young people suffer most of the injuries, mostly to eyes, head and hands. Even sparklers, often thought to be harmless, can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and cause hundreds of serious injuries to small children every year. For youngsters under 5, sparklers account for three-quarters of all fireworks injuries.

Salinas, 93906-3590. Lina May Foley of King City died Gospel singer Marion Williams dead at age 66 New York Times News Service Marion Williams, a pioneering gospel singer, died Saturday at the Albert Einstein Medical Institute in Philadelphia. She was 66. The cause was vascular disease, said her record producer, Anthony Heilbut. Williams was a flamboyants singer who put her songs across with pure sustained tones, swooping phrases and deep growls.

Her influence was heard throughout gospel music and in secular music as well. Little Richard has said her octave-leaping high whoops were the source for his vocals in and other songs, and Aretha Franklin recorded Williams' two biggest hits. and God Is Williams performed in churches, at concerts and in nightclubs, and in 1993 she received a MacArthur Foundation grant and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. I'm singing, I get inspired by God," she said in a 1980 interview with The New York Times. "I call it "the It's an extra-special thing.

When the inspiration of God is missing, I just rely on talent." Williams was born in Miami in 1927 and grew up singing in sanctified churches, although she was also exposed to blues and jazz. In 1947 she joined the Clara Ward Singers, the preeminent gospel group of the 1950s, and soon became the lead singer. In 1958 she and other members of the Ward Singers started their own group, the Stars of Faith, and in 1961 they appeared on Broadway in a gospel musical by Langston Hughes. Williams began performing as a soloist in the mid-1960s, appearing at churches and colleges and touring the world. In 1966 the State Department sponsored her tour of Africa.

She recorded for Savoy, Vee Jay, Columbia and Atlantic Records from the 1950s through the 1970s. The Californian officials say are more accessible to children during July 4th, which add to the risk of injury. If your kids nag you to buy some kind of legal fireworks and you finally give in, avoid these, says the fire protection agency: I Fireworks that leak powder, appear quite old or show signs of mishandling.
